This list is under construction, so please be patient. More information
will be added in the days ahead.
The rose as we know it today, and even rose gardening, would not exist in
the form we know it today had it not been for the Empress Josephine and her
interest in roses. During the early years of the 19th century, she set about
collecting every known rose and establishing one of the most celebrated rose
gardens in history at her home, Malmaison. Sources indicate that
approximately 250 varieties of roses were grown there from 1804 until her
death in 1814.
Unfortunately, while an inventory of the other plants she grew at
Malmaison was created after her death in 1814, there was never a list of the
roses grown there.
In 1912, Jules. Gravereaux set about researching the roses grown at
Malmaison and published a list, La Malmaison. les roses
de l'impératrice Joséphine. While we'll never know for
sure what was grown there due to the lack of any inventory created during
the period
The list below is a direct product of his book. At the end of the list,
I've also included some additional varieties he mentions as possibilities,
and my own additions based upon my reading of works by experts such as
Graham Stuart Thomas, Peter Beales, and the ARS Modern Roses book.
The names of roses--particularly their common
names--change. Where possible, I've indicated all possible names for any
particular variety of rose.
The darker blue rows with bold black italics are the
rose categories/species names, as in this example for Rosa gallica.
I've also included the category used by Gravereaux (Provens).
Where possible, I've also included the specific Latin
name for specific varieties, listed in the same rose as that variety.
